Introducing Camera Roll

Added a new section to the blog, the Camera Roll . This is my take on the reverse chronological image/video grid that is so popular in many social media apps today.

There are many reasons to dislike Instagram these days:

  1. changes in moderation
  2. ending end-to-end encryption
  3. targeting rage bait to increase screen time
  4. stealing and selling everyones' data

So I decided to roll my own! It doesn't have a comment section (yet?) and I've decided to paginate for now instead of an infinite scroll approach. I think pagination is just kind of nice. It can give you a mental resting point each time you have to click to the next page.

State of my home server

For a while now, I've been hosting services for my own use. It's really nice to know I hold and control everything. I've been jerked around by online services I don't control for long enough in my life. They shut down, change terms, remove features.. My own choices however, are usually deliberate.

There are more inherent risks when self-hosting, as I am not a company, but often is more than sufficient for my needs.

The soup is blended, so the image above is as it is cooking, not the final result.. the soup is so soothing and warming. It's perfect if you're feeling cold, or ill. This soup can be felt rolling down your throat and into your belly, warming you up along the way. It's also very easy to make with ingredients that are easily found, and store well (canned tomatoes, basic produce). The cream is the exception, it will go bad in a few weeks, and it's not sold at every store.

marinated chicken, laying on a pan

Simple, versatile

This recipe takes little time or effort but yields great chicken that is easy to use in many ways. I've used it in pitas, over rice or pilaf, simply in a bowl with some toppings, and even as a simple sandwich on wheat bread.

Ingredients

  • boneless skinless chicken thighs, 1kg (2lb)
  • tumeric, 1/2 teaspoon
  • paprika, 2 teaspoons
  • ground cumin, 2 teaspoons
  • ground black pepper, 2 teaspoons
  • kosher salt, 1 teaspoon
  • lemons, 2, juiced
  • olive oil, 1/2 cup, and 1 tablespoon to grease the pan

Freezer Food

Foods that can be prepared ahead of time, and frozen, and then easily restored to their former glory, are really my favorites. Luckily, this is many dishes, many things freeze well.

Lately I've been on a big soup kick, making gallons of soup and freezing them into large blocks. I've been using a knock-off brand of these silicone freezer trays which have been a great tool for freezing soups and chili (perhaps chili is itself a soup). It really makes it easy to prepare meals for the future. When I want some, I pop out a block or two of a meal the night before or morning of, and let it thaw in the fridge. In a pinch I can put them in a bowl of water on the counter and thaw a bit quicker.
